  15. professor and erstwhile house intellectual to President Lyndon
  16. Johnson; following a stroke; in Princeton, N.J. After getting a
  17. Ph.D. in American history at 22, Goldman did a stint as a TIME
  18. writer in the 1940s. His premier historical work was a
  19. chronicle of American liberalism, Rendezvous with Destiny. When
  20. L.B.J. assigned him in 1963 to liaison with the intelligentsia,
  21. Goldman lauded "the wide-open freshness of the Johnson
  22. Administration." Within three years, he fell victim to the
  23. President's mistrust of academicians and quit the
  24. Administration.
