- <p> DIED. Eric Goldman, 73, Princeton University history
- professor and erstwhile house intellectual to President Lyndon
- Johnson; following a stroke; in Princeton, N.J. After getting a
- Ph.D. in American history at 22, Goldman did a stint as a TIME
- writer in the 1940s. His premier historical work was a
- chronicle of American liberalism, Rendezvous with Destiny. When
- L.B.J. assigned him in 1963 to liaison with the intelligentsia,
- Goldman lauded "the wide-open freshness of the Johnson
- Administration." Within three years, he fell victim to the
- President's mistrust of academicians and quit the
- Administration.
